Fall is one of the most magical times of year to explore the beauty of Ontario. After you pick one of the hiking trails around Guelph, or a new conservation area to check out, you’ll want to make sure you are prepared for the trails.
As the weather changes, there are a few things you should bring with you and be prepared for. Here are seven safety tips to keep in mind before hitting the trails.
Plan ahead: Check the forecast, plan your route and bring a map. Days are shorter in fall - you want to make sure you have enough time to finish the loop. Afternoons and evenings can become cooler much faster compared to other seasons. Never start a trail if you are unsure that you can make it back before dark.
Check the latest trail conditions: Before you head out, check the most updated status of trail conditions. It can inform you of any park closures or weather conditions.
Warmup before you hike: Take a few minutes to get your body moving before you hike. You can do some light cardio and stretches.
Stay hydrated:
Packing water is essential for any hike - no matter what season it is.
Bring a backpack: Although you may not be as tired from the heat with the cooler weather, it’s important to bring a backpack where you can keep food, water, and other essentials.
Protect your feet:
Invest in a pair of footwear that offers support, comfort, durability, and weather resistance. Proper hiking boots will give you added grip in wet areas and protect your feet from getting wet from puddles or mud.
Dress appropriately:
Layers are key when it comes to outdoor activities in autumn. Below we have suggestions of what to wear on a fall hike.
As we mentioned above, layers are crucial when you are planning a hike in autumn. Mastering the art of fall hiking is all about climbing your base top, mid-layer, and outer layer. Here are some tips on what to wear or bring:
Base layer: If possible, switch cotton with merino wool. It provides good insulation, transports moisture, has anti-static properties and isn’t itchy.
Pants: Jeans aren’t the best option for fall hiking - they are heavy and do not dry fast. It’s a good idea to wear a pair of thicker fabric pants; a softshell layer will protect you from wind and rain.
Raincoat or softshell: These outer layers can keep wind and water away from your clothing and are easily packable and lightweight.
Socks and boots: As we mentioned above, it’s worth having a pair of quality hiking boots. Along with that, if you layer socks, first use a synthetic wicking liner and then a wool sock to prevent blisters and keep your feet warm.
In your backpack, remember to pack hats, gloves (rainproof is even better) and scarves to add more layers if you feel chilly.
