Did you know the first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970?
It wasn’t until 1990 where the day became globally recognized. Although the world has changed since then, the importance of protecting our planet has always been critical. Over 1 billion people advocate for Earth Day, and over 190 countries are engaged in making a difference.
Here are four ways to celebrate Earth Day and how you can take action every day to protect our planet.
Many of us can’t attend in-person events, but there is plenty of online learning and action. From April 20-22, tune into Earth Day’s virtual summit will have world climate leaders, grassroots activists, non-profit innovators, industry leaders, artists, musicians, and the leaders of tomorrow will come to inspire us towards a better world. Get members of your household together to go on a nature walk – but don’t forget garbage bags and gloves to pick up any litter you see on your travels. It is estimated that almost 10,000 tonnes of plastic debris enter Ontario's lakes and rivers every year.
No matter how small or large you can plant this year, every plant makes a difference. When possible, plant native flora and fauna from your region. Increasing biodiversity in your backyard helps improve the soil and provide habitats for all types of wildlife. Growing your own fruits and veggies can also limit how much food you waste.
Limit your use of plastic bags, water bottles, straws and single-use plastics. Every year, Canadians toss out 3 million tonnes of plastic waste, and only 9% gets recycled—meaning many plastics end up in landfills or become litter.
There are many alternatives, such as canvas sacks, reusable containers, cloth paper towels, and reusable utensils. Don’t forget your portable water bottle and reusable coffee mug when you’re out!
Our actions may seem small, but we can make our planet a little bit greener every day when we work together globally.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
