It’s a new year, a fresh start and often many people find themselves wanting to clear the cobwebs. Refreshing your space can feel fulfilling, therapeutic and can also help get your mindset feeling productive for the year ahead!
Knowing where to begin can seem overwhelming with the sheer size of the task at hand, but we’ve put together a short list of ways to refresh your space for the new year!
Deep cleaning your home/office space is the best way to get started. It creates a new, fresh atmosphere free of dust and dirt from the year before. Start by tidying up clutter and then go in with surface cleaners and dust cloths, followed by the vacuum cleaner. Changing the bedding, replacing towels, lighting a candle, even opening the windows will bring a new lease of life into a space. All of these things may well be in your regular cleaning routine, but there’s something different about the ‘new year clean’. It feels like a new start and sets the tone for the days ahead!
Organizing can be so satisfying, or horrifying… But once complete, it feels great. If you struggle to part with things use the 3 month/6 month rule; have I used this within the last 3-6 months? Am I likely to use it in the next 3/6 months? If you answer no to both, it's time to say goodbye. Go through drawers, cupboards and your closet and just get rid of anything that doesn’t get used or that you don’t like. Clothes and toys can be donated to charity shops or to friends. You could even sell things online and make some extra cash! Recycle everything you can and make space in your home. Organizing your storage is a great way to figure out what you need and don’t need in life, instead of just shoving things to the back of the closet and hoarding things. In the wise words of Marie Kondo, does it spark joy? If not, get rid.
Houseplants deserve some TLC too! Sprucing up your plants can bring some new life into your home as well. Repotting, changing the water, adding a moss-pole; all will contribute to a revival of your botanical friends. If you don’t have any houseplants, finding your favorite ones at a plant store or even buying artificial plants can all add to creating a nice vibe.
The walls of our spaces protect us from the elements, create a safe space and take the weight of our art, photographs and furniture leaning against it. Give the walls a freshen up with some paint by covering up marks and scuffs here and there. You could even try a 'feature' wall for a whole different look, with accents of complementary colours throughout the room. A relatively quick, easy task that will make your rooms look good as new!
Moving the furniture around the room is guaranteed to make everything feel revitalized! It’s also a great way to see what your space is capable of. The art of Feng Shui uses forces of energy to harmonize individuals with their surrounding environment and could be a great way to learn more about the interior design of your home. How we set up the furniture in our homes can have a big impact on our mental wellbeing and how we feel about being in that space. So changing it up every now and then can contribute to uplifting our moods!
Here’s to 2023 with a positive, fresh start and feeling inspired by our spaces!
