Nothing feels quite as satisfying as spring cleaning!
No one wants to spend their whole weekend cleaning, so we put together some tips to focus on one room or space at a time. It can feel like a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be.
Whether you have ten minutes or a few hours to spare, you can freshen up your home for the season.
Windows
Overcast days are the best for cleaning windows. Raise blinds and shades and wash with a glass cleaner and microfibre cloth. Lower the blinds or vinyl shades and use a duster. Vacuum the fabric shades and drapes.
Cutting Boards
Give your cutting boards a deep clean by sprinkling them with salt or baking soda. Then cut a lemon in half and run it across the cutting board.
Fridge
The inside of your fridge should be wiped down regularly, but seasonally it should have a deep clean. Remove the bins and shelves with warm soapy water.
Microwave
Time to conquer those microwave stains. It’s as easy as filling a large microwave bowl with one cup of water, a lemon or lime, and seven tablespoons of vinegar. Place inside, turn the microwave on high for five minutes, or until the solution is boiling. Let it cool for a few minutes before opening the door and wipe with a sponge.
Oven
Use your appliance’s self-cleaning option to remove stuck-on grime. You can also scrub with baking soda and a heavy-duty pad. Rinse and wipe dry.
Reusable Bags
Cutting down on plastic is excellent, but reusable grocery bags can get dirty and stained over time. Check the tag to see if they are machine washable or clean with soapy water and a sponge. Let it air dry.
Makeup Cabinet & Brushes
Toss out expired makeup, skincare and hair products. Some will have an expiration date, while others will lose potency after opening. Take a few minutes to wash makeup brushes with baby shampoo. Shake off the water lay flat to dry.
Shower
Clean your plastic or vinyl shower curtain on a gentle cycle with detergent. Let it hang dry before showering.
Freshen up drains by mixing ½ cup of baking soda with ¼ cup table salt. Pour it down the drain and follow with 1 cup of heated vinegar. Let it sit for 15 minutes and run hot tap water for 30 seconds.
Furniture
Move furniture away from walls and vacuum under and behind it. Clean out any air vents too. Don’t forget the upholstery attachment and go over and under cushions and seating.
Bedding
Tackle those pillows and comforters. Check the manufacturer's label before washing. Give sheets and blankets a good wash through your washing machine. Vacuum your mattress before placing everything back on.
Curtains
Vacuum your fabric curtains, or toss them in your dryer for 15 minutes on the air-only cycle. Rehang immediately to avoid wrinkles.
Bookshelves
Organize your bookshelves and coffee table books. Remove them, give the shelves a good dusting, and then return your reading materials. Freshen up the look by alphabetizing, colour blocking or sorting by size.
Closet
Go through closets and shoes and remove anything that no longer brings joy. Donate, give to friends, or sell online. Try on items you are unsure of.
Washing Machine
Keep odours away by freshening up your washing machine by using the cleaning option, adding in vinegar or a washing machine cleaner.
Don't forget to freshen up your condo with some
orchids,
flowering houseplants,
or a
DIY herb basket.
