Next time you’re visiting one of the best garden centres in Guelph, take a look at these low-maintenance houseplants.
ZZ Plant
With its bold, architectural foliage, ZZ Plants are a cherished tropical plant for low-light spaces. They have an efficient water retention system with their bulbous roots, so it is highly suggested to wait until the plant has dried out entirely before waterings - generally this is every 2-3 weeks but always check your plant before. ZZ Plants prefer indirect sunlight - too much direct sunlight can cause the leaves to burn.
Snake Plant/Sansevieria
One of the most popular low maintenance tropical plants out there. Snake plants need a minimum of 4-5 hours of of indirect light. They are very hardy and thrive in low-light conditions. You’ll want to let the soil dry out between waterings. When watering, aim to get the water on the soil, not the foliage. You can fertilize with an all-purpose plant food in the growing season for optimal growth.
Pothos
If you’re looking for a trailing plant that not only looks great, but also cleans indoor air, the pothos plant is a beautiful choice for your home. You’ll want to water every 1-2 weeks - if you notice any foliage dropping, it’s time to water. They prefer indirect sunlight over direct sunlight, as the direct sun can cause the foliage to burn.
Aloe Vera
If you have a spot with bright, direct sunlight, Aloe Vera is a beautiful addition with its spiked, vibrant green foliage. Let aloe vera dry out entirely between waterings - this can be as little as every two to three weekends, depending on how humid your indoor air is.
Rubber Plant
Also known as ficus elastica, this tropical plant can be enjoyed as either a medium or large focal point. They adapt well to indoor locations as long as they have good drainage and bright, indirect sunlight. If you notice any leaves falling off or losing their lustre, it likely needs more sun. Depending on the season, you’ll need to adjust the watering. It prefers the soil to be kept moist so check your plant weekly.
Spider Plant
If you’re looking for a two-toned plant, spider plants will thrive indoors if you have a spot that receives bright to moderate sunlight. Watering once a week is often good enough in spring and summer, but always check your plant to be sure.
